Beaches near Frigiliana.

Frigiliana isn’t on the coast, but the coast is fifteen minutes down the hill — and includes some of the best beaches on the Costa del Sol. Burriana, Maro, and the protected coves of the Maro-Cerro Gordo Natural Park.

Frigiliana is six kilometres inland and three hundred metres above sea level — but the coast around Nerja and Maro is one of the more beautiful stretches of the Costa del Sol, and easy to reach. The five beaches below cover everything from family-friendly resort beach to secluded protected cove. None requires more than a 25-minute drive.

Five beaches within 25 minutes

The beaches worth the drive.

Burriana Beach

15 min

Family-friendly + facilities

The main beach in Nerja — wide stretch of golden sand, full facilities, restaurants and chiringuitos along the back, parasols and sunbeds for hire. Best for families and anyone wanting an active day with food and drink within reach. Famous for Chiringuito Ayo's espetos (sardines grilled over driftwood).

Playa de Maro

20 min

Snorkelling + scenery

A horseshoe of pebble and coarse sand backed by towering cliffs, in the Maro-Cerro Gordo Natural Park. Crystal-clear water, excellent snorkelling, and one of the most photogenic beaches on the Costa del Sol. Limited facilities, no major resort feel — that's the point.

Playa del Cañuelo

25 min + walk

Quiet escape

A secluded cove inside the Maro-Cerro Gordo Natural Park, accessed via a steep walk from a small parking area. Limited daily access by shuttle in summer (capped numbers to protect the cove). Worth the effort for a quiet day with clear water and dramatic cliffs.

Playazo de Nerja

15 min

Long quiet stretch

The longest beach in the area — about 1.8km of dark sand to the east of Nerja. Less developed than Burriana, fewer crowds, and good for walks. Some limited facilities at the western end.

Calahonda Beach

15 min

In Nerja old town

Small but charming cove right under the Balcón de Europa in Nerja's historic centre. More about location than swimming — beautiful setting framed by cliffs, surrounded by restaurants. Get there early in summer for space.

The Maro-Cerro Gordo Natural Park

The most beautiful stretch of coast near Frigiliana is the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo — a 12km protected natural park stretching east of Nerja. Towering limestone cliffs, clear water, hidden coves only reachable by foot or kayak, and Posidonia seagrass meadows that make for some of the best snorkelling on the whole Costa del Sol.

The most accessible beach inside the park is Playa de Maro. For more secluded coves — Cala del Pino, Cala de las Alberquillas — you either walk down steep paths from the cliff-top road or kayak in from Maro. In peak summer, vehicle access to Playa del Cañuelo is restricted via a shuttle bus to limit crowding.

Practical beach tips

  • Parking is the hard part in July–August. Burriana’s lots fill by 10am; Maro is small. Get there early or use a taxi.
  • Bring water shoes for Maro and Cañuelo — coarse sand and pebbles, not the smooth grain of resort beaches.
  • Best swimming months: June through October. The sea is warmest in September. Spring is workable but still cool.
  • Sunset on Burriana is excellent — the cliffs catch the light. Stay for dinner at one of the chiringuitos.
  • The bus from Frigiliana drops you in central Nerja — Burriana is then a 15-minute walk, the others need a taxi.
